The M-16 is classed as an assault rifle and fires the standard NATO 5.56 mm round. It is still manufactured by numerous companies around the world. The M-16 is made of aluminum and special plastics, while the barrel and operating parts are made of steel. The damage caused by a single hit of this weapon is massive. Many of the men in my unit would tape three magazines together, two facing one way and the third in the center, the other way. This was to speed changing magazines as one was emptied. On automatic, a magazine could be emptied in seconds. Automatic fire was discouraged.
